Atlas of Dutch Brazil
About the project
In November 2025, work will begin on a publication about the excavations at Fort Orange, in collaboration with Brasil Arqueológico and the Federal University of Pernambuco. The project is financially supported by the Dutch Embassy in Brazil and DutchCulture.
Since 1999, researchers from the NHF have been involved in research on Dutch heritage in Brazil. Following archaeological excavations at Fort Orange on Itamaracá Island — where a complete Dutch fort from 1631 was discovered beneath a later Portuguese fort — an inventory of shared heritage was initiated: the Atlas of Dutch Brazil. The preliminary results of this research have been incorporated into the Atlas of Mutual Heritage (www.atlasofmutualheritage.nl).
